Description
Estate cottages numbers 15 and 16, built around 1840, are possibly designed by Anthony Salvin, who worked at Helmingham Hall around 1841. They are constructed of brick in Flemish bond with a moulded brick stack on the party wall. The roofs are covered with pantiles and feature ornamental vergeboards on the facing gables, a half dormer, and slightly swept eaves. The cottages are two storeys high with an outshut at the rear. The left unit has an entrance situated between two windows, with a half dormer above that is slightly off-axis. The right unit has a slightly projecting facing gable and an entrance to the outer range. The doors are of original design and set within four-centred arches, while all the windows are flat arched. The cottages exhibit a picturesque style that blends vernacular forms with elements of the 'cottage orne' tradition. They are part of a group that includes cottages 3-8, 15-20, the Estate Yard, the Old Post Office near the crossroads to the north, and the Old Forge.
