Description
The Estate Yard is a service building dating from around 1840, possibly designed by Anthony Salvin, who was involved with Helmingham Hall around 1841. The structure features weatherboarded and brick construction, with a moulded brick stack on the short arm. It has pantiled roofs on the main sections and facing-gable dormers, which include ornamental vergeboards and slightly swept eaves. The building is two storeys high and is arranged in an L-shape, creating a yard to the southwest. All openings are flat arched. There is an outshut to the north, and a large facing gable with double doors is located in the long arm of the L. A smaller dormer is positioned to the right of the stack on the short arm, and there is an entrance under a gabled canopy porch at the outer corner of the short arm. The design reflects a picturesque style that combines traditional vernacular elements with features from the 'cottage orne' tradition. The Estate Yard is part of a group that includes cottages numbered 3-8 and 15-20, the Old Post Office near the crossroads to the north, and the Old Forge.
