Description
Estate Cottages numbers 17 and 18 are a pair of cottages built around 1840, possibly designed by Anthony Salvin, who was active at Helmingham Hall around 1841. They are constructed of brick in Flemish bond and feature a moulded brick stack on the party wall. The cottages have pantile roofs with ornamental vergeboards on the gables and half dormers, along with slightly swept eaves. They are two storeys high and have an outshut at the rear. The elevation of these cottages is the exact inverse of numbers 15 and 16. The doors retain their original design, and the ground-floor windows on the right side of the facing gable and to the right of the party wall have glazing in an authentic pattern. The cottages exhibit a picturesque style that combines vernacular forms with elements of the 'cottage orne' tradition. They are part of a group that includes cottages 3-8, 15-20, the Estate Yard, the Old Post Office near the crossroads to the north, and the Old Forge.
