Description
The Old Post Office is a building that was originally a post office and is now a house, dating from around 1840. It is possibly designed by Anthony Salvin, who was active at Helmingham Hall around 1841. The structure is built of brick in Flemish bond and features a moulded brick stack located between the second and third ranges. The roof is covered with pantiles, has swept eaves, and includes ornamental vergeboards on the gables at the returns, as well as a trio of gabled dormers. The building is two storeys tall and has an outshut at the rear. It has segmental arched windows with casements that retain their original design, flanking an entrance that is set beneath a gabled canopy porch. There are secondary stacks at the corner on the left. The architectural style is picturesque, blending vernacular forms with elements from the 'cottage orne' tradition. The Old Post Office, along with cottages numbered 3-8 and 15-20, and the Old Forge, forms a cohesive group near the crossroads.
