Description
Estate Cottages numbers 19 and 20 are a pair of estate cottages built around 1840, possibly designed by Anthony Salvin, who was active at Helmingham Hall around 1841. The cottages are constructed of brick in Flemish bond with a moulded stack on the party wall. They feature a pantile roof with swept eaves and are single-storey buildings, each having one dormer facing the gable, which is off-axis with the openings below. The ground-floor openings of each unit are unevenly spaced but symmetrical when viewed as a pair. The cottages have flat-arched windows with casements that reflect an authentic design, and the doors, also of an authentic design, are set in four-centred arches. The architectural style is picturesque, blending vernacular forms with elements of the 'cottage orne' tradition. These cottages, along with numbers 3-8, 15-20, the Estate Yard, the Old Post Office near the crossroads to the north, and the Old Forge, form a cohesive group.
