Description
Estate Cottages numbers 7 and 8 are a pair of cottages built around 1840, possibly designed by Anthony Salvin, who was active at Helmingham Hall around 1841. The cottages are constructed of brick in Flemish bond and feature a moulded brick stack on the party wall. They have pantile roofs with ornamental vergeboards on the facing gable and half dormer, along with slightly swept eaves. The cottages are two storeys high with an outshut to the rear; the left unit has a slightly projecting facing gable, while the right unit includes a half dormer. There is a four-centred, arched entrance to the outer ranges with a door of original design. The architectural style is picturesque, combining vernacular forms with elements of the 'cottage orne' tradition. These cottages, along with numbers 3-8, 15-20, the Estate Yard, the Old Post Office near the crossroads to the north, and the Old Forge, form a cohesive group.
