Description
Nos. 92, 93, and 94 on Ipswich Road are a terrace of three cottages that were subdivided from an early 16th century three-cell open hall house, with alterations made in the late 16th century. The cottages are two storeys high, partly with attics, and are constructed of timber framing with plaster. The roof is pantiled, likely originally thatched, and features a red brick axial chimney that was rebuilt in the mid-20th century, along with a 19th-century internal end chimney on the right. The windows are modern casements, and each cottage has a half-glazed modern panelled entrance door; No. 93 also includes a pantiled-roofed porch.
Internally, No. 93 contains the former open hall, No. 94 serves as the service cell, and No. 92 is the parlour cell, which was likely rebuilt in the late 16th or 17th century (not examined). The open truss of the hall features an arch-braced cambered tie-beam that is hollow chamfered. At the base of one of the arch braces, there is a finely carved pilaster shaft, with the upper half being polygonal and having a moulded capital, while the lower half resembles a buttress with sunk traceried panels. The close studding is well-preserved. In the late 16th century, an upper floor was added to the hall, supported by closely spaced chamfered joists. The roof was reconstructed in the 17th century, incorporating principal rafters and purlins.
