Description

FRAMSDEN - TM15NE 4/10018 Estate Cottages, nos 103 and 104

GV II

Pair of cottages, c1840, perhaps to the designs of Anthony Salvin, who was active at Helmingham Hall (qv) in c1841. Brick in Flemish bond with moulded brick stack to party wall. Pantile roofs to gables and half dormer, ornamental vergeboards to large gables, and roof with slightly swept eaves. Two storeys with outshut to rear. Left unit with slightly projecting, facing gable with window of authentic design to first floor. Single dormer to right hand unit. Entrances under four-centred arches in outer ranges with doors of original design. Ground-floor window with casements of original design to no. 104. Picturesque style combining vernacular forms with those of the 'cottage orne' tradition. Cottages 97-110, spanning the boundary between Framsden and Helmingham, form a group.
