Description

Helmingham Parish School and Master's House is a parish school built in 1853 and later in the 19th century. It is constructed of brick in Flemish bond and features pantiled roofs, gables, and gable-facing dormers with decorative vergeboards. The building has a roughly U-shaped plan and consists of one and two storeys. The double gable-facing wings on the left side, which are part of an earlier build, served as the master's house. Entrances are located between the gables and in a porch on the left return, which also has a chimneypiece at the rear. Each gabled range includes a shallow canted bay, and the flat-arched windows are fitted with leaded casement lights. The hall range at the rear has six windows, is half dormered, and is part of a later building with wooden sash glazing. There is a broad facing-gable range to the right, with stacks located to the right of the master's lodge and a tall octagonal stack at the right inside corner. A smaller facing gable wing is present on the right return. The interior of the hall features glazed trusses. The building is listed for its group value with St John's Row to the north.
