Description
The water pump on the north side of the B1077 in Framsden is an early 19th-century structure, dating to around 1840. It stands just over 2 meters tall and features a wrought iron cow tail handle and a lead spout, all enclosed within a wooden casing.
Water pumps became common in towns and villages during the 18th and 19th centuries, although many were closed later in the 19th century due to health concerns related to waterborne diseases like cholera. This particular pump was built to supply water to the row of cottages directly opposite it.
The pump is designated as a Grade II listed structure for several reasons. It has historic significance as it served the nearby estate cottages and contributes to the village landscape and social history. Despite the likelihood that the timber casing has been replaced, the pump remains largely intact. Additionally, it holds group value with the estate cottages it was built to serve, which are also designated at Grade II.
