Description
Estate cottages numbers 138 and 139, built around 1840, are likely designed by Anthony Salvin, who was active at Helmingham Hall around 1841. The cottages are constructed of brick in Flemish bond and feature a moulded brick stack on the party wall. They have pantile roofs with vergeboards and swept eaves, and are two storeys high with an outshut at the rear. The left unit has a slightly projecting gable on the party wall and an entrance under a four-centred arch leading to the outer range. The right unit has a half dormer and a similar entrance that is off-axis to the dormer, flanked by windows. The cottages exhibit a picturesque style that combines vernacular forms with elements of the 'cottage orne' tradition. Both doors retain their original design. Cottages 135-143 and the Church form a group.
