Description
Top Farmhouse is a former farmhouse dating from the early to mid 17th century. It features a three-cell cross-passage entrance plan and stands two storeys tall. The building is timber-framed and plastered, topped with a thatched roof. There is a central 17th or 18th-century red brick chimney and a gable chimney from the 18th or 19th century on the right side. The windows are mid 20th-century small-pane sashes, and there is a 20th-century framed and boarded entrance door located at the cross-passage position, which is sheltered by an open gabled porch supported by timber posts.
Internally, the complete 17th-century timber-framing is exposed. The first-floor structure is clamped, with chamfered joists laid flat, while those in the service cell are square. The large chimney features lintelled back-to-back fireplaces in both the hall and parlour. There is evidence of unglazed diamond-mullioned windows throughout the building. Additionally, there is a small extension from around 1800 on the right side and another extension from the mid 20th century at the centre rear.
