Description
Moat Farmhouse is a mid-17th century farmhouse featuring a three-cell plan with both a cross-passage and a lobby entrance. The building has two storeys and attics, constructed with timber framing and plastered walls. It has a plain-tiled roof with a central axial chimney made of red brick, which has a pilaster shaft. The windows are 19th-century small-pane sashes. There is a 20th-century plastered and plain-tiled gabled entrance porch with a pair of panelled doors. This farmhouse is a notable example from the 17th century, showcasing well-exposed framing, including close-studding and exposed chamfered ceiling joists that are laid flat in some rooms and on edge in others. The roof structure consists of principal rafters with joggled butt purlins. Inside, there are good back-to-back fireplaces, with the one in the parlour featuring a brick arch and the one in the hall having a cambered lintel. The house is situated on a site that includes an incomplete medieval moat.
