Description
Lower Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the 15th century, with alterations made in the late 16th century and late 19th century. It is a three-cell open-hall house that stands two storeys high, constructed from timber framing and pebble-dashed. The roof is covered with concrete tiles and features an axial chimney made of plastered red brick, along with two mid-20th century chimney shafts.
On the ground floor, there are large-pane sash windows from the 19th century, while the first floor has 20th-century casement windows. The entrance door, which is panelled, was added in the 20th century and is located at the cross-passage. Inside, the two-bay open hall has a crown-post roof that shows signs of smoke damage. The open truss has mostly been removed, leaving only the crown post, which is missing its lower half, and features a crude octagonal capital with thick four-way braces. The studwork at the hall gables is widely spaced. One end cell has a coupled-rafter roof. A first floor was added in the late 16th century, with a roll-moulded binding joist. Until around 1960, the roof had hipped and gable ends, and the late 16th-century stack between the hall and parlour had square diagonally-set shafts.
