Description

The Old School House is a former farmhouse that served as a village school during the 19th century. It dates back to the 15th or early 16th century and features alterations mainly from the 16th and 19th centuries. The building has a three-cell plan and is one storey high with attics. It is constructed from timber framing and plaster, with the gable ends and a later wing encased in late 19th-century red brick. The roofs are covered with plain tiles, and there are axial and external end chimneys made of red brick. The 19th-century small-pane casements include some with moulded cast iron lintels. A lean-to entrance porch with a glazed panelled door is also present.

Inside, the two-bay open hall features an open truss with an arch-braced tie-beam, where the braces are chamfered and have remained intact despite the addition of a 16th-century first floor. The roof is smoke-blackened with coupled rafters, some of which have double collars, and the last couple forms a smoke-gablet. The storeyed cells at either end of the hall have been much altered. Around 1600, the parlour cell was extended with a coupled-rafter roof. The 16th-century hall fireplace has a wide lintel marked with an apparent merchant mark, and similar markings can be found on the hall tie-beam, likely predating the inserted floor. Additionally, a pair of 16th or 17th-century base-crucks stands on a first-floor beam over the parlour, allowing for the removal of a 15th-century tie-beam and providing access to the parlour chamber beyond.
