Description
Brook Farmhouse is a former farmhouse dating from the mid 16th century to the early 17th century. It originally had a three-cell plan with a cross-passage entrance, which was later reversed, and a parlour block was added in the early 17th century with a lobby entrance. The building is two storeys high, with the parlour block featuring an attic. It is constructed from timber framing and roughcast, topped with a thatched roof and an axial 17th-century chimney made of red brick. The windows are late 19th or early 20th-century sashes with small panes, and there is a 20th-century gabled entrance porch with a boarded door.
Inside, the 16th-century section has a queen-post roof that was originally hipped at both ends. The jowled posts support triangular-section purlins and slender arch-braces, along with good wind-braced studwork and blocked diamond-mullioned windows. There is also a blocked four-centred arched doorway at the former cross-entry. The 17th-century remodelling involved a complete replacement of the first floor, featuring chamfered joists, and the addition of a large chimney with a newel stair in the former service cell. The parlour cross-wing includes a bridging joist with double-ogee moulding.
