Description
This is a house located immediately west of The Retreat, dating from the 15th century, with the upper end rebuilt in the 16th to 17th centuries. It features a timber frame with textured plasterwork and a thatched roof, originally hipped over the service end, and has one and a half storeys. The house was likely a former open hall house, probably of three-cell form. It has three windows, which are 19th-century casements, except for one standard mid-20th century window on the right. The ground floor windows are adorned with wooden hoodmoulds. There is one eyebrow dormer and another dormer with a small lean-to pantiled roof. A mid-20th century gabled porch leads to a four-panel door. The house has an internal stack and a gable stack on the right side. To the left, there is a small one-storey pantiled wing. Inside, there is a queen-post roof over the hall, and although the open truss has been removed, evidence of the arched braces can still be seen on the wall posts. The lower end wall of the hall remains intact, and there is evidence of an original six-light diamond mullioned hall window. A stack was inserted against the upper end of the hall in the 17th century, and an inserted floor, with joists not visible, is likely from the same period.
