Description
6 and 7 Cross Street is a building that was originally one house but is now divided into two dwellings. It dates from the mid-17th century, around 1650, with a small 19th-century colourwashed brick addition on the left, likely added when the house was split. The building is timber framed, with No. 6 featuring a plastered exterior and No. 7 having a textured render. It has a plaintiled roof and stands two storeys tall with an attic, arranged in a three-cell form.
There are three windows, which are small 19th-century casements, with those in No. 7 lacking glazing bars. No. 6 has a boarded door in the 19th-century addition, while No. 7 has two boarded doors. Small bracketed drip boards are positioned over all ground floor openings. Inside, there is an internal stack, with the lower part featuring an original oval panel, and later gable stacks. No. 6, which includes the parlour end of the 17th-century range, has a ground floor room with an axial bridging beam and stop-chamfered joists with scroll stops. The building has widely spaced plain studs, and the roof features stepped butt purlins and newel stairs. The interior of No. 7 has not been examined, but much of its structure is said to be concealed.
