Description

No. 16 Cross Street is a house dating from the mid-16th century, with alterations from the 17th century and an extension added to the rear in 1951. It is constructed with a timber frame and plastered exterior, topped with a thatched roof. The building has two storeys and features three windows, which are 19th-century three-light small-paned casements with hoodmoulds. There is a lobby entrance that includes a six-panel door, and above the doorway is an additional single-light window. Three eyebrow dormers from the mid-20th century are located directly above the first-floor windows.

Inside, there is an internal stack, with the lower part of the shaft likely dating to the 17th century. The internal layout has been altered, making the original form unclear. The stack is a later addition that intrudes into what was once a principal room, which features a fine bridging beam with cavetto and roll moulds, complete with run-out stops, and substantial plain joists. The adjacent end bay to the left has a blocked four-centred arched doorway in the front wall and plain joists of varying quality. The right-hand end displays studding of variable quality; the gable end, which has curved braces, remains intact, while the plain joists include one bay that has been trimmed for a stair. The roof has not been examined.
