Description

The Red House is a former farmhouse dating from the 16th century, built in two phases, with alterations made in the late 19th century and mid 20th century. The building is timber framed, with the front and right gable end covered in red brick added in the 1880s, which features a panel dated with the initials 'AW'. A brick casing was added to the rear in the 1940s. The house has a thatched roof and stands two storeys high. It consists of a main range with a cross-wing to the left that extends to the rear. A single-storey outhouse from the 19th century is set forward of the cross-wing, almost corner-to-corner with it.

The house has three windows featuring 19th-century three-light casements with whitewashed wedge lintels. There is a mid-20th century boarded and battened door located in the cross-entry position, topped with a gabled hood. A second doorway into the cross-wing has a matching door and hood. Inside, there is an internal stack situated between the hall and the cross-wing, and an external stack against the right gable end. The hall features closely spaced chamfered joists, with only one bay exposed. There are small remains of a plank and muntin screen still in place against the cross-passage. A straight stair, dating from the 19th or 20th century, is located in the cross-passage.

The first floor has some good studding with reverse-curved braces, and in the front wall, there are two blocked windows with chamfered mullions. The cross-wing, which is later than the rest of the house, appears to have been used as kitchen and service rooms. It has intact studding and remains of at least two windows with square mullions. Above this wing is a clasped-purlin roof featuring cranked wind braces.
