Description

The Retreat is a house that was formerly the Royal Oak public house, likely built in the 17th century. It features a timber frame with plaster and applied timbers on the facade and the right gable end, topped with a thatched roof. The building has two storeys and three windows, with various casements; the ground floor windows are quite large, containing either 12 or 16 panes. There is a small upper window with old diamond-leaded glass. The entrance has a lobby entry with a plastered lean-to porch and a slated roof, leading to a mid-20th century boarded and battened door. Inside, there is an internal stack with a small 19th-century shaft. To the left, there is a 20th-century lean-to garage. The interior has not been examined.
