Description
Three Ponds is a former farmhouse dating from the late 16th century, with a slightly later addition on the right that used to extend to the rear. The original part of the house likely had a three-cell layout, although the parlour cell on the left is now lost. The building was renovated between 1985 and 1986. It features a timber frame with plaster and a pantiled roof that is hipped to the right. The house has two storeys and an attic, with small-paned casement windows from the 19th and mid-20th centuries. There is a cross-entry doorway with a 19th-century four-panel door, and small hoodmoulds above all main openings. On the left side, there is a heavy gable stack, much of which retains its original plain oblong shaft, and a further stack at the rear within the later range. A lean-to addition is present on the left gable end.
The interior has been considerably modernised, featuring plain studding with reverse-curved braces, the braces at the later end being cranked. The hall is two bays with a chamfered-joist ceiling, although one bay has been altered to accommodate a mid-20th-century stair. A girding beam set into the main stack bears the date 1596, and the newel stair by the stack has been retained. The roof has clasped purlins with cranked wind bracing.
