Description
Swan Hill Cottage is a house dating from the 15th century, constructed with a timber frame and plaster, topped with a thatched roof. It has one and a half storeys and features a three-cell layout with a former open hall. The cottage includes various old casement windows and one small eyebrow dormer. There is a small 19th-century colourwashed brick lean-to that extends forward to the left, which has a mid-20th-century door in its side wall. Inside, there is an internal stack with a small shaft and a later stack located against the front gable end. The largely intact frame is visible within the building. The front wall has a two-centre arched cross-entry doorway. An open truss has been removed, and the cambered tie beam has been repositioned against the stack. On the ground floor, there is one buttress-shafted wall post with the lower portion of a brace, while the upper end wall of the hall remains intact. The parlour features medieval joists with trimming for a stair, and a service partition has been removed. A stack has been inserted in the lower bay of the hall, and the floor in the hall was inserted around 1600, complete with an axial bridging beam and stop-chamfered joists. The service end contains on-edge pitchpine joists from the 18th or early 19th century.
