Description

Widows Nest is a house dating back to the 15th century, with a 20th-century addition to the west. It is built with a timber frame and plaster, featuring some original panelled plasterwork on the north side. The roof is covered in pantiles. The house is one-and-a-half storeys high, with a variety of 19th-century casement windows and one gabled dormer to the south. A boarded entrance door is located on the north side, set within a doorway with a hollow-moulded two-centre arched head.

An internal stack, shared with the adjacent property, is positioned near the roof ridge: the original 16th to 17th-century shaft has been rebuilt in the 19th century. The early 20th-century addition is constructed of common brick and has a pantiled roof. The original structure comprises a two-bay former open hall, with the service end to the west now removed. Sooted studding is visible at first-floor level, and there are tension braces in the lower gable end.

Both cross-entry doorways and one service doorway remain intact, all with two-centre arches formed from a single blade. The original open truss is largely concealed, but features an octagonal crown-post with run-out stops to a plain square base. A stack was inserted into the upper bay of the hall. An inserted floor has an axial bridging beam, with the joists concealed.
