Description
Widows Nest is a house located in Worlingworth, dating from the early 17th century, with an extension added to the west in 1910. The building is timber framed and plastered, topped with a pantiled roof, and consists of two storeys in a two-cell form. It features mid-20th century standard casement windows that do not have glazing bars, along with a mid-20th century glazed door. An internal stack has a 19th-century shaft. The extension is constructed from common brick and also has a pantiled roof, complete with a gable stack.
The original timber frame consists of four bays, with much of it exposed on the first floor. Some original windows remain, although their mullions are plastered over. The tie beams were cut in the mid-20th century to create a side passage. On the ground floor, a two-bay room showcases chamfered joists and original trimming for a ladder stair. In the other ground floor bays, the structure is concealed, except for a plain unchamfered cross-beam, which may indicate the presence of a former smoke bay.
