Description

School House is a house that was once a shop and The Crown public house, dating from the mid 17th century. It is timber framed and mostly plastered, with the right gable end and two-thirds of the rear covered in late 19th century red brick. The roof is pantiled, and the building has two storeys and an attic.

The front features two windows with 18th century three-light mullion and transom casements that have old square-leaded glass and window boxes. On the ground floor, there are two slightly splayed projecting shop windows with small square panes supported by raking brackets, and these windows are grooved for external shutters. Between the shop windows is a lobby entrance with a six-panel door, where the upper two panels are glazed. A plaintiled lean-to hood extends across the facade at the first floor level.

Inside, there is an internal stack with a 19th century panelled square shaft. The left gable end has an original four-light first floor window with ovolo mullions, and a 19th century stack is positioned against this gable end. The internal layout consists of two cells, with a small one-bay room at the left end. This room features an axial bridging beam on the ground floor, with plain joists set flat at the rear and an oak newel stair along with a later straight stair at the front. The adjacent room has two bridging beams, ovolo-moulded on the ground floor and chamfered on the upper floor. A stack has been inserted into the centre of this room at a later date, which is an unusual arrangement that may indicate the house has been reduced in size. The first floor has plain studding with trimming for original windows, and the roof has two rows of diminished butt purlins, with the lower row stepped.
