Description
Yew Cottage is a house dating from the 15th century and early 17th century. It has two storeys and is constructed with a timber frame that is rendered, topped with a thatched roof and features an internal chimney stack with a plain red brick shaft. The cottage has 2-light and 3-light casement windows with cross-bars. There is an enclosed late 19th-century porch made of whitewashed brick, which has a shallow-pitched slate roof and a corbelled gable.
Inside, the ground floor rooms on either side of the chimney stack have exposed ceilings with plain heavy joists and main beams, along with much-restored open fireplaces that have timber lintels. The two central bays of the frame, located to the north of the stack, are remnants of an open hall, featuring a blocked 6-light diamond-mullioned window on the west wall. The tie-beams of the open truss and one end truss have been removed. The north end of the cottage may also be part of the medieval structure, but it has been significantly remodelled, and the roof here is an 18th-century replacement. The roof over the former open hall is not accessible. The chimney stack has been inserted into the lower bay of the hall, and the two bays at the south end are from the early 17th century, showcasing reversed braces at the corners and a side purlin roof. There is also a later extension along part of the rear wall.
