Description

Three Chimneys is a house that dates back to the 16th century, with alterations in the 17th century and extensions made in the late 20th century. The building features a timber frame that is partly exposed, with plaster infill and some tile hanging on a painted brick base. It has a plain tiled roof and may have originated as a hall house.

The house is two storeys high, with a hipped roof and chimney stacks located to the right and centre left, as well as one on the left. There are four wooden casement windows on each floor, featuring 1, 2, and 3 lights, with the right window located in an outshot. The entrance, which was originally positioned to the centre left, has been relocated to a raking porch in the re-entrant angle of a late 20th-century wing on the left side.

The rear elevation showcases an exposed frame with large tension-braced panels, which have been altered to include smaller panels on the right side, all set on a sandstone base. The roof has two gabled dormers, three two-light leaded wooden casements, and a projecting single-storey extension to the left.

Inside, the full frame is visible, with the wall exposed in the right end outshot revealing massive arched broom and lozenge set window mullion mortices. The ground floor was re-ceiled during the insertion of the stack, and the lower (northern) end of the house may have been rebuilt at the same time. The stack features a very wide painted stone inglenook with an attached bread oven, and the house has a 17th-century queen strut roof.
