Description

Chandlers Cottage is a house dating back to the 16th century, originally a hall house. It faces south. The house has a timber frame and was plastered, with a half-hipped thatched roof. In the 17th century, a stack was inserted one-third of the way along the east end, along with a new floor and a winding staircase. A boarded door is located next to this stack. The building has three structural bays featuring tension bracing. The roof structure includes clasped purlins, collar beams, curved wind braces, and partitions below the trusses. A four-light window from the 16th century survives at the rear in the west bay, with evidence suggesting similar windows were originally in the centre of the west and middle bays of the side walls. The building features swept jowled heads to the bay posts. The inserted floor to the hall has chamfered edges to the axial beam and joists. A modern half-hipped extension was added to the east end. The south front is plastered and has four windows and a central door. A medieval four-light oak window is on the left side, and two-light wooden casements flank the door. A three-light casement is located in the east extension. There are two swept dormers to both the front and rear of the property.
