Description
This is a farmhouse, likely dating from the 16th century or earlier. It originally comprised three bays, with a cross passage leading through the centre, and a service room on the west side. In the 19th century, a two-story extension was added to the rear (north side), resulting in a widened roofline. The original timber frame is still visible, with some ashlar remaining on the gables. The front of the building is timber-framed and plaster-lined, with brick casing and modern pargetting. The steep roof is covered with old red tiles, although the rear section has a flatter pitch reflecting the reused structural elements of an earlier, clasped-purlin roof.
Inside, the original layout included three rooms in a line, with the cross passage beside an undivided service room. A large chimney backs onto the cross passage, serving a two-bay hall with stop-chamfered spine beams and a run-out stops, along with an axial beam. Evidence suggests the south side of the house was originally jettied. A blocked door in the exposed oak stud wall leads from the parlour on the east end into the north extension. Other features include a single-story service room, an external gable chimney with an oven on the west side, and a 19th-century external gable chimney on the east. The interior retains exposed timbering, including large jowled posts on the first floor, and a fine decorative floor structure above the middle room.
