Description

Chequer Tree Farm is a house that dates back to the 15th century, with alterations made in the 16th and 17th centuries, and restored in the late 20th century. The building features a timber frame with exposed plaster infill and a plain tiled roof. It is designed as a Wealden hall house with extensive rear wings. The structure has two storeys set on a stone plinth to the right, with continuous jetting. The originally fully recessed central hall bays are at a higher level, and the eaves are supported by arched braces that are now part of the walling. The roof is hipped with large gablets and a central stack.

On the first floor, there are four leaded wooden casements, with the two central windows featuring mullions and transoms. The ground floor has three windows, with the one to the centre left also having mullions and transoms. There is a plank and stud door to the centre right, along with a restored arched doorway made of two derns. The roof pitch on the right end is steeper, featuring a larger gablet compared to the left side, which has a lower two-storey framed wing at the rear.

Inside, the framing and roof structure indicate that the right end bay has been altered, likely in the 16th century, to accommodate the new wing. The roof features a crown post, with the central hall post being octagonal and moulded with a capital and base. There is a transverse crown post in the upper end chamber, and the lower right end chamber has a rebuilt roof. The hall and rear wing contain large inglenook fireplaces, and there is a stone-lined cellar.
