Description

Old Peacock Cottage is a house dating from the 16th century or earlier. It is timber-framed with red brick infill on a sandstone base, and the first floor is tile-hung, with a plain tiled roof. The original design was a lobby-entry plan. The house is two storeys high and stands on a plinth, with a dropped eaves line to the first floor. The half-hipped roof incorporates gablets, with projecting hip ends where the wall plates are truncated and exposed, indicating the building was originally longer to both sides. A stack cluster is situated towards the centre of the right-hand side. Windows are wooden casements, with three lights on each floor at the front and two lights on each floor at the rear. A lean-to outshot is located on the right-hand side, open on the ground floor and forming a porch to a boarded door in the right return. There is a blocked doorway in the left return. A catslide outshot extends to the rear. Internally, the rooms have very low heights, featuring an exposed timber frame of large timbers with tongue-stopped chamfers and gunstock-jowled main posts. An inglenook fireplace has been infilled.
