Description

This is a milepost located approximately 50 metres south of Corner House in Stratford St Mary. It dates from 1831 and was made by J Garrett, an ironfounder. The milepost is made of cast iron, painted white, with black lettering in relief. It has a triangular shape with a round-arched back plate. The inscriptions indicate distances: to London 58 miles and to Ipswich 11 miles and Woodbridge 18 miles on the left side; to Colchester 7 miles and Chelmsford 29 miles on the right side. The milepost is marked with "J Garrett Ironfounder St Margarets Ipswich 1831."
