Description

This is a mile post located on the southern verge east of Frating Lodge, dating from the late 19th century. It is made of cast iron and stands approximately one metre high with a triangular plan. The slanting head of the post displays the distance to London as 57 miles, to Colchester as 6 miles on the east side, and to Thorpe as 6 miles on the west side. This mile post is one of the few surviving cast iron examples in Essex, with most others found in the Tendring District. It is possibly made by Lawford Ironworks.
