Description
A group of three cottages, likely originating in the 15th century, with alterations from the 16th to 17th centuries and an early 19th century front range known as Rosebank. The cottages are timber-framed and rendered, with plain tile roofs. The layout consists of a front range with two cross wings projecting at the rear; the left section of the front range was rebuilt or refronted in the early 19th century. Rosebank has a two-bay early 19th century front range with a six-panel door and overlight in a pilastered doorcase to the right, and renewed 16-pane sash windows and 12-pane sashes in reveals with sills above. A stack is located on the left gable. The rear range is at a lower level and has a steeply-pitched swept roof and a saw-tooth stack. Nelson’s and Side Cottage have a three-window front with a single-storey extension to the right, which includes a 19th century shop window. A central 20th-century glazed door is set in painted brickwork with jamb lights. The windows are 3- and 5-light casements. The rear cross wing of Rosebank is gabled, while that of Side Cottage is gableted, with a rebuilt, stepped stack rising through a catslide roof over a later extension of Nelson’s. The interior of the rear range of Rosebank appears to be two separate builds. Part of the frame is exposed, displaying a jowled post with arch brace to a tie beam and studded walls. A basket-arched fireplace is present. Nelson’s Cottage is likely from the later 16th century and sits slightly higher than the cross wings, as evidenced by framing members exposed in an end partition wall. A partition wall shared with Side Cottage features a section of a trefoil door head to the ground floor and the base of a post, possibly a crown post, supported by a tie beam to the first floor, along with studded walls. An inglenook with chamfered jambs and a bressummer is on the ground floor, with a basket-arched fireplace above. The roof is a three-bay, clasped purlin design. The interior of Side Cottage has not been inspected.
