Description
Gatemans is a house dating from the 16th century, with later alterations. It is timber-framed and rendered, featuring a front that was originally jettied but is now underbuilt in brick. The roof is made of plain tiles, and there are red brick stacks. The building has two storeys and an attic, arranged in an L-plan. There is a blocked entrance to the right and a present entrance at the rear. The ground floor has 20th-century casement windows, while the upper floor features restored mullion windows. The ridge stacks are prominent, and there is an extension with a pent roof to the right. At the rear, a gabled cross wing projects to the right.
Inside, the house has a two-bay range with a cross wing. The central room features a chamfered beam and exposed joists, along with a brick inglenook that has a timber bressumer. The walls are studded, and on the first floor, there are jowled posts and tie beams with arch braces, although several are missing. The front wall has a restored diamond mullion window with a groove for shutters. There is also a section of what is likely an 18th-century stair balustrade with twisted balusters. The purlin roof has been largely renewed. The building was undergoing renovation at the time of the resurvey.
