Description

TM 0434 STRATFORD ST MARY UPPER STREET (south side) 5/42 Gatemans (formerly 22.2.55 listed as Wayside) GV II House. C16 with later alterations. Timber-framed, rendered. Front, originally jettied, underbuilt in brick. Plain tile roof. Red brick stacks. 2 storeys and attic. L-plan. Blocked entrance to right, present entrance to rear. C20 case- ment windows to ground floor and restored mullion windows above. Ridge stacks. Extension under pent roof to right. Rear: gabled cross wing projects to right. Interior: 2-bay range with cross wing, centre room chamfered beam and exposed joists. Brick inglenook with timber bressumer. Studded walls. To 1st floor, jowled posts, tie beams with arch braces, several missing. To front wall restored diamond mullion window with shutter groove. Section of probable C18 stair balustrade with twisted balusters. Largely renewed purlin roof. Undergoing renovation at time of resurvey.
