Description
60 and 62 London Street is a former cafe that has been converted into a shop. The building dates back to the 19th century and features a 16th-century cellar. It is constructed of yellow brick and has three storeys plus a cellar, with a total of eight bays. The shopfront was updated in the late 20th century, and there is a door to the upper floors located on the extreme right. The building has sash windows throughout, which are topped with rubbed brick flat arches. Most windows have glazing bars, except for the three bays on the right-hand side of the first floor. A parapet wall crowns the structure.
Inside, there is a fine early 20th-century cafe ceiling that includes moulded plaster acorn and oak-leaf surrounds to the stained glass rectangular lights. The 19th-century cellar features one side chamber with a four-centre profile that extends beneath the pavement. The 16th-century cellar is located off-centre to the right and is set back from the street line. To the south of the building, there is a large stack with a timber bressumer and later brick blocking for the fireplace. The right-hand stackside has a doorcase with a rectangular fanlight, while the central doorway in the west wall has a chamfered, pointed arch. Additionally, the doorway in the north wall features roll-moulded chamfer jambs and a Tudor arch with plain spandrels.
