Description
16 and 17 Market Square is a shop and dwelling that dates back to the 17th century, with alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is rendered and features incised masonry patterns, topped with a plain-tile roof from the 20th century. It likely originally had a two-unit plan and stands two storeys high with an attic, presenting a three-window range. A 20th-century shop front is located to the right of the centre, while a canted bay window is positioned to the left. The first floor has 19th-century horned and quartered sash windows with moulded, rendered surrounds. The building has a rendered plinth and painted lead rainwater heads at either end of a coped parapet. There are three gabled roof dormer windows, each with two-light casements.
Inside, the cellar or basement features chamfered spine beams and two fireplaces with chamfered bressumers, likely used partly as a kitchen. The first floor has boxed spine beams and a corner fireplace in the rear room with a bolection-moulded wood surround. The roof is a three-bay structure with collar trusses, round-arched bracing to the collar with chamfers, and one tier of visible purlins.
