Description

This is a shop and dwelling, with a 19th-century front built onto a structure that may date back to the 16th century or earlier. The building has undergone alterations in the 17th, 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. The front is rendered and has old plain tiles. It is two storeys and an attic, with a two-window front. There are 20th-century casement windows under cambered heads, and two box dormers with 20th-century casements. A 20th-century shop front is present, and to the left, a square-headed opening leads to a rear passage with chamfered spine beams with run-out stops. The left returned side is rendered, while the rear range is roughcast with some surviving stucco. Evidence of timber-framing is visible, including the possibility of a jetty. The rear also has 20th-century dormers, windows, an entrance, and a mansard roof. A late 19th-century porch with a four-panel door leads to a rear cross-wing, which has roughcast and weatherboarded gables under a corrugated-asbestos roof. At the rear, a storeyband is visible. A four-pane sash window is set within a segmental arch opening. There is late 18th-century brickwork, large purlins, and a steeply pitched roof. The interior features a late 19th- or early 20th-century stick baluster staircase from the first to the second floor. The roof is medieval, possibly raised in the 18th century. On the second floor, exposed ceiling beams are present; on the ground floor, roll-moulded ceiling frames are visible. A wing at the rear contains medieval jowelled post and close studding, along with some original roof structure, although the roof is now 20th century.
