Description
Nos. 8 and 9 Commercial Road are shops and dwellings that date back to the 17th century, with a refronting in the 19th century. The building is constructed of painted brick and features a plain tile roof, with older tiles on the rear pitch and a brick axial stack at the back. It stands two storeys tall, with an attic and cellar, and has a two-window range. On the right side, there is a 10/10 sash window in a moulded case, while the left side has a 20th-century casement window. The building includes brick segmental arches and moulded drip courses, along with two early 20th-century gable dormers that have bracketed and ornamented eaves. The right side features a 20th-century shop front, which includes a glazed door and canted plate-glass windows set between panelled pilasters, along with a moulded fascia-board and hood supported by stop-consoles. The left side also has a 20th-century shop front. Inside, there is a 17th-century chamfered ceiling frame, a cast-iron pillar, and the upper floors retain some timber-framing.
