Description

Nos. 2 and 4 Castle Street are shops and dwellings that date from the early 18th century and feature an encasement of 17th-century timber-frame construction. The building is made of brick, with timber framing and old plain tiles, and has a brick ridge stack on the right and brick stacks at the rear. It has a two-unit plan and stands three storeys tall, with an attic and cellar. The façade has a two-window range with 6/6 sash windows, where the left window is in a moulded case under gauged brick flat arches, and there is a central blocked opening under a gauged brick semi-circular arch. The right unit has a 6/6 sash under a gauged brick flat arch, with another 6/6 sash above it. The left unit features a 6/6 sash in a moulded case under a gauged brick flat arch and a central blocked opening, along with moulded and modillioned wood eaves.

There is a central passageway leading to Quality Square, supported by timber lintels and posts. To the left, there is an early 19th-century shopfront that includes a part-glazed panelled door with an overlight to the right, and a canted bay with glazing bars and tapered shafts on chamfered brackets to the left, all beneath a moulded cornice. The right side features a 20th-century door, overlight, glazing, and stallboard, integrated into the earlier shopfront. The passageway to the rear reveals exposed box framing with brick infill and moulded plates on both sides, along with spurstones and a 20th-century leaded light on the right. The rear elevation displays various lights and casements, including some 18th-century leaded lights on the left, central blocked openings, and a wide gable dormer with a tripartite window, as well as an outshut with a plank door in a chamfered case to the right.
