Description

This building comprises a mid-to-late 18th-century shop and dwelling, later adapted for hotel use. It is located on the south side of Market Square in Buckingham. The exterior is rendered over brick, with an incised masonry pattern, and has a concealed plain-tile roof with a valley and a brick end stack. The building follows a double-depth plan and presents a 5-window facade over three storeys. A pilastered wooden shop front, altered in the 20th century, is located to the left of centre. Twelve-pane sash windows are present on the ground floor to the right of the shop front, set within moulded rendered surrounds. Matching sash windows, diminishing in height, occupy the first and second floors. Rectangular, blank sunk panels are positioned above the second-floor windows, directly below the cornice. The building features a rendered plinth, channelled rustication applied to pilaster strips at either end of the ground floor, and rusticated quoins on the upper floors. Sill bands are present on the first and second floors. A moulded cornice is topped by a low blocking cornice that conceals the roof.
