Description
59 Mansfield Road is a shop and café with living accommodation above and a bakery below, now functioning as a restaurant. It was built around 1860, with additions made around 1900, and altered around 1991. The building is constructed of red brick with painted ashlar dressings and features a slate roof. It has a moulded cornice and a plain brick parapet. The structure is three storeys high and has two window ranges. The ground floor showcases the original wooden shopfront, which includes side pilasters and an entablature above, along with a doorway to the right that has a glazed door and overlight. Above this, there are two margin light sash windows, and above those, two smaller sash windows, all featuring painted ashlar wedge lintels.
Inside, the basement contains bakery ovens at the rear. The shop area is fitted with shelves and cabinets that have decorative detailing. The east wall has a fitted cabinet with bevelled and etched mirrors, leading to a refreshment room that is separated by an elaborately carved screen. This refreshment room boasts an unusual clerestory roof and high-quality stained glass windows. A typical stick baluster staircase leads to the upper rooms, which feature good quality marble fireplaces adorned with elaborate tiles. The building retains all its original doors, skirting boards, coving, and papier mache ceilings and friezes.
