Description

This is a red brick town house, now used as an adult education centre, constructed around 1850, with an addition dating to around 1880 and conversion in the mid-20th century. It is built in a classical style, featuring a plinth, quoins, a first floor sill band, an entablature, and a blocking course. The building is three storeys high and has a seven-window front, arranged as a 2:3:2 pattern. The windows are plain sashes. A projecting central section features an unusual Ionic portico with two columns in antis, a rusticated basement with quoins, and a dentillated pediment. The elliptical arched doorway has a keystone and crest, leading to a panelled door with a fanlight and side panels. Above the doorway is a pedimented window flanked by narrow round-arched windows, with similar fenestration on the upper floor but with smaller windows. The side bays each have two windows on every floor, set within moulded surrounds. Cast-iron area railings are set on a chamfered ashlar plinth in front of the side bays. A red brick addition to the left features ashlar dressings and slate roofs. This addition is two storeys high with a four-window range. Its windows are top-hung casements. A square, two-stage tower with a pyramidal roof rises from the centre of the addition, featuring a single window on each floor. To the left of the tower is a gable with two windows on each floor, and to the right, a narrow entrance bay with a door and a single window. The interior was largely refitted in the mid-20th century, although a moulded cornice remains in the ground floor office. Outside, the addition includes a gable and a narrow entrance bay.
