Description
The gates, railings, and boundary walls to the Arkwright Building were constructed between 1877 and 1890 by Lockwood & Mawson. Made of ashlar, cast iron, and wrought iron, they stretch the full width of the Shakespeare Street front and along the left side, measuring approximately 90 meters by 80 meters. The right side extends about 20 meters. In the center, there are two pairs of iron gates flanked by iron intermediate piers and octagonal ashlar end piers topped with spires. Behind these, there is a low ashlar boundary wall featuring chamfered coping and square pedestals on plinths, with a single rail supported by cast-iron stanchions. This structure is part of the original architectural design of the university college.
