Description

NOTTINGHAM

SK5740SW BURTON STREET 646-1/14/10004 Newton Building at Nottingham Trent University

GV II

University building, formerly Trent Polytechnic. Designed 1952. Built 1956-58. Designed by Cecil Howitt. Portland Stone facing, expressed as a cladding by the alignment of both vertical and horizontal joints. Flat roofs. Low block, polygonal in plan, containing entrance and workshops, surmounted at right-angles to the street by an eight-storey slab. Stripped classical manner. Entrance block treated as symmetrical composition with projecting centre with fluted pilasters in antis. Vertical window to left and right each with projecting metal grill. Five-light window to flanking ranges. Slightly recessed glazed attic storey. Slab recessed behind street facade with moulded vertical window to end elevation. Broad flanks each have panel of vertical strip windows with projecting masonry pilasters, flanked to either side by panels with narrow horizontal windows. Delicate metal framed single-glazed windows with margin glazing. INTERIOR retains matching original staircase. A good example of Cecil Howitt's later work, showing the Modernist idea of the "slab and podium" translated into a classical manner.
