Description
38 Abbeygate Street is a shop that was formerly used as living accommodation above. It dates from the early 19th century but has a 16th-century cellar. The building is timber-framed and rendered, topped with a slate roof that features a paired modillion eaves cornice.
The exterior consists of three storeys and cellars, with a three-window range. The windows are small-paned sashes set in cased frames, adorned with ornate wooden architraves and small cornices. The ground storey has a 20th-century shop front.
Inside, the cellar is divided into two halves by a partition wall. The eastern half has two bays and retains a 16th-century supporting timber framework that is corbelled out from the walls, with long arched braces leading to one tie-beam and plain, flat joists. The western half of the cellar has partially collapsed but appears to extend beneath the street.
