Description
The Precinct Wall is a Grade II* listed structure that dates back to the 13th century, with significant rebuilding in the 18th and 19th centuries. It is constructed from brick, flint, and rubble, topped with tiled coping. The remaining sections of the wall can be found between Erpingham and St. Ethelbert's Gates, located behind buildings in Tombland and the Cathedral Close, extending slightly to the north and south. The south-west corner of the wall is below the level of the lane, reaching the end of No. 4 The Close. It stands over 6 feet high from behind Nos. 5 and 6 to the end of the garden. Following St. Faith's Lane, there is an 18th-century rebuilding, possibly on earlier foundations, leading to the Horsefair. A 13th-century flint wall extends south from the Horsefair to the far end of No. 24. Portions of the earlier wall are still visible along Nos. 22, 23, and 24, adjacent to Ferry Lane. The east wall of the Close, dating from the 13th century and later, runs from Ferry Gate to the south boundary. Additionally, a 12th-century close boundary wall faces the south boundary of gardens from Nos. 44 to 59 The Close. In the north-east corner of Bishop's Palace Garden, seven arches from the former wall walk remain, although arches from the adjoining east section have been removed.
