Description
This is a section of the City, Palace, and Castle Wall that runs east from Priory Gate to an angle near Wharf Mill and north to the Hall above Magdalen Hospital. The walls, which date back to the 13th century, are now quite fragmentary but can still be traced along their length. They were repaired in 1376 and again in the 15th century. Constructed from limestone rubble, the most complete section, which includes battlements, is located at the south-east corner. Portions of the walls are shared by the City, Wolvesey Palace, the Cathedral Close, and Wolvesey Castle. Two gates remain: Westgate, located on High Street, and Kingsgate, on St Swithun Street; both of these gates are Scheduled Ancient Monuments.
