Description
St John's Hospital (South) was built by William Garbett in 1817, 1831, and 1833, with dates noted on the rainwater heads. This two-storey building features a three-storey tower at the entrance. The walls are made of grey brick with a red diaper pattern and stone dressings. Notable architectural elements include stone quoins, an arch at the main entrance, an oriel window, a cornice, and machicolations on the tower. There is a stone string course above the ground floor windows and a brick cornice on the wings. The roof is tiled, and the chimneys are clustered with octagonal shafts. The ground floor has an entrance arch and twelve windows, while the first floor has thirteen lattice casement windows. The Colebrook Street wing underwent alterations in 1972. For reference, there is also a St John's Hospital (North) located on the north side of High Street.
